The Geometrica Structural System
Architects and engineers have long dreamed of a structural solution that provides complete geometric freedom while achieving economic efficiency. Geometrica offers just this system.
Geometrica structures work as space frames and take advantage of 3-dimensional structural behavior. They are built of prefabricated lightweight and strong galvanized steel or aluminum tubes interconnected at site.
The connection of the tubes is compact, simple and very efficient; no welding is required. It consists of an extruded aluminum cylindrical hub with several threaded slots. Tubes are formed at the ends into a matching linearly threaded pattern, which slides into the hub’s slot. When all the tubes that go into a certain hub have been assembled, the joint is completed with washers and a single bolt. Geometrica's patented hub is designed to be stronger than the joined tubes.
And uniquely among space frame systems, Geometrica’s allows the transfer of moments across the joint. This allows the support of the deck directly on the space frame members, without secondary structural deck support elements that are often as heavy as the frame itself. It also allows the creation of thin surfaces of double curvature that can span up to 300m (1000’).
The aesthetics of a Geometrica hub are outstanding. Up close it is clean and elegant, but from the usual distance, it is inconspicuous and does not distract from the geometry or the intended structural purpose. The tubes are slender. The whole structure has an airy and efficient feeling not possible with bolted systems.
Any structural geometry is possible with the Geometrica system, including flat and faceted space frames, singly curved arches and vaults, doubly curved domes and hypars, as well as arbitrary free style shapes. For bulk storage, this capability results in elegant and economical solutions.
